As the setting of many books, films, and songs, San Antonio is an adequately storied place that possesses undeniable character. One leisurely nighttime stroll along the softly lit riverwalk or an overnight stay at the Hotel Emma is all it takes to succumb to Alamo City’s charm. Couple that with a humming economy and affordable real estate, and it’s no surprise people are moving to San Antonio. The only question that remains is, where are they going? Here are the three San Antonio neighborhoods to keep your sights on in 2020.
Downtown San Antonio
Though the median home price of a downtown residence hovers around the low $400s, or about $200k more than the city’s median, its central location and proximity to office-based commerce make downtown a desirable location for empty nesters and young professionals alike. Here, residents can enjoy short commutes, jogging along the river or taking their out-of-town guests to some of the city’s finest restaurants. As evidenced by the number of high rises popping up, there’s definitely a demand to be downtown.
Local tip: Try Maverick Texas Brasserie, the latest vision of Peter Selig - the restaurateur who also founded Biga on the Banks. Maverick is the type of place where Texas-sourced ingredients meet traditional French technique for an approachable, yet elevated dining experience.
River Chase
About 40 miles outside of San Antonio proper, River Chase gives families the chance to really spread out and enjoy their summers knowing they’re just a short drive away from the Guadalupe River. Not surprisingly, the big properties of River Chase also come with an equally large price tag. The median home price for River Chase hangs in the mid-400s range, which is enough to put it among San Antonio’s priciest areas, but that’s not slowing anyone down. River Chase remains one of Redfin’s most sought after areas.
Local tip: Love hot licks and cold beer? Snag a ticket online and make the trek over to the River Road Ice House in New Braunfels for your dose of rock, folk, blues, jazz, metal, karaoke, and country.
West Canyon Lake
With a median home price in the high $200s, West Canyon Lake is the ideal, affordable Texas Hill Country escape. Approximately 45 miles from downtown San Antonio, West Canyon Lake is perfect for anyone who enjoys walking the dogs, fishing at dawn, or spending the afternoon on the water.
Local tip: take a minute to sit back, relax, and take in the views from a bench in Canyon Overlook Park, or wind down after a long day by taking the dogs for an evening walk.
