Chicago Buildings With Stories to Knock the Wind Out of You

Chicago Buildings With Stories to Knock the Wind Out of You

Chicago’s Architecture Is Almost as Good as the Pizza

From deep-dish pizza to “Da Bears”, The Windy City has more than its fair share of iconic contributions to society. But did you know that this Chicago-style excellence also extends to architecture? While the history behind Willis Tower and Merchandise Mart may be a little more mainstream, the backstories of these five Chicago skyline staples might surprise you.

The “People’s Palace” was originally constructed in 1897 to house the very first Chicago Public Library as well as the headquarters of a Civil War veterans organization mere decades after the war had ended. It wasn’t finished until nearly 100 years later when it was reimagined as a community center in 1991. Now offering free music, art, and programming all year round, the building is a designated Chicago Landmark and enjoys a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. It’s an icon of Classical Revival design, most noted for its many stunning mosaics of glass, gold leaf, mother-of-pearl, and gemstones.

This Hyde Park treasure is a real slice of history. The home is one of architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s most famous projects and a perfect example of his signature Prairie Style. It was built in 1909 for a local bicycle producer, and, in 1966, received one of the very first slots on the National Register of Historic Places. The structure features artistic use of lines, brick and limestone, dark wood, and stained glass.

These corn-cob-esque skyscrapers were one of the city’s first examples of mixed-use housing. After decades of suburban migration, architect Bertrand Goldberg sought to draw Chicagoans back to the city center. In 1967, he built Marina City, a “city within a city.” The complex included apartments as well as a theatre, bowling alley, and ice skating rink. Today, you can rent or buy one of these historic Marina City homes for as little as $1,400 per month.

Aqua

Constructed in 2009, this building is newer than others on this list but no less iconic. Aqua seeks to address an age-old design problem identified by 19th-century architect Louis Sullivan: How can tall, functional buildings incorporate aesthetics? Modern architect Jeanne Gang cast aside the traditional boxy build and instead opted for a series of organic, rippling concrete balconies. The finished product resembles more of a sculpture than a skyscraper. Each balcony is a unique size and shape so residents can more easily connect with their up- and downstairs neighbors. The nontraditional shape also breaks up stronger gusts of wind, provides shade, and even steers birds away from the windows. Today, you can rent your own unit in this architectural icon for as little as $1,669 per month.
