To start:
- You must be at least 18 years of age
- Have a high school diploma or equivalent
- Be a citizen or legal resident of the United States

Complete 55 Hours of Approved Pre-Licensing Education

Pass the course final exam
After you complete all course materials, meet the minimum time requirement, and pass the practice exam, there is a course final exam. You must get at least a 75% to pass.

Pass the Maine State Licensing Examination
The Sales agent Exam in Maine is administered by Pearson Vue and you can schedule the exam right from their website.
Here are a few pieces of info to help you prepare:
- The test consists of 120 questions.
- There are two portions, covering both state and national requirements.
- The passing rate for the Exam in Maine is 75%.
- You will have four hours to complete the exam.

Complete a Background Check
As a condition of getting your Maine real estate license, you must submit to a criminal history background review. You’ll pay the $121 for your criminal records check which is included with your real estate license application fee.

Complete and Submit Your Application
You can apply online via the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation. Alternatively, you can mail in your paper application. The application fee is $121 and consists of a $100 application fee and a $21 criminal background check fee. You must apply for licensure within one year of passing the Sales agent Exam.

Select a Sponsoring Broker
In order for your license to be in active status, you must be employed by or under contract with a licensed real estate agency in Maine, and under the supervision of the agency’s designated broker. It's important to find the right broker to work with since they will serve as your mentor as you start your new career in real estate.
